Table Lamp Inspired by Mathematical Structures Found in Nature

Design: Naomi Kaempfer

The design for the Ratio.MGX lamp is the result of a study into phyllotaxis (the principles governing leaf arrangement), mathematical structures, and the rational and irrational distribution patterns in nature.

The lamp, together with its electricity cables, rests unconnected in a concrete base, which makes it possible to take the lamp out of its base like a torch. The Ratio.MGX is the rational part of a twin design. The irrational counterpart has not yet been released.

The designs for .MGX lampshades are generated from a computer file, which is then manufactured by using a rapid prototyping technology, this 3D material printing process allows for freedom of design far beyond the capacity of traditional manufacturing technologies.
