Design: Hans J. Wegner 1960
As strong and distinctive as a bull, the Oxchair is padded, covered with oxhide or fabric and raised off the floor by light but strong legs in chromium-plated steel, it is another chair without parentage - and one that has become an image and an archetype.
Among the jobs it does, and one that lies close to Wegner's heart, is to make it possible to sit comfortably in many different ways so that one can change position continously. Only then can one sit really comfortably. It is Wegner's own favourite chair at home, in his 100-square-metre living room and clearly a chair that needs space around it.
Like other pieces of furniture which are now regarded as modern classics Oxchair was ahead of its time when it was launched in 1960. Making use of superior craftsmanship skills Wegner had created a sophisticated and demanding construction. In 1989 Erik Jørgensen and Hans J. Wegner collaborated in bringing Oxchair back to life. Today Oxchair stands as a sculptural, agile and masculine manifestation of the very best which Danish furniture has to offer. An organic upholstered furniture that presents itself to the beholder as if formed from one single block.
